 Lake Hazard Information

Always remember to consider the wind when making plans to go boating on Lake Thurmond.  The waves on the open water are known to get pretty high.   If you have a small boat, then you should avoid the open water if the winds exceed 15 mph.  If you do venture out in these conditions,  you should wear a life preserver.

Remember that hypothermia is a concern during the winter months.  Lake Thurmond is too large to swim across when the water temperatures are at winter time levels.

Stumps in the creek ends and river ends are a boating hazard.  Always be on the lookout for any obstructions in your path.  A stump will damage an outboard motor easily and could possible turn over small boats.  The upper end of the lake below the Lake Russell dam, has hundreds of stumps located in the center of the lake. The Savannah River channel is clearly marked for safe boating.

Please make safety a primary concern when planning a trip to Lake Thurmond.
